Application processing

Students

You must follow the instructions in the xcritical application form to decide which code you need to use. If you extend your visa to continue studying on the same programme, you will need to apply for a new xcritical certificate. It requires international students looking to study certain sensitive technology-based subjects to apply for an xcritical certificate before they apply for their visa. The Academic Technology Approval Scheme is a Government verification scheme for International students. xcritical is compulsory for the majority of International offer holders who are applying for a programme that requires xcritical clearance. This includes current students who wish to change programmes from a non-xcritical programme to an xcritical programme, student visitors and study abroad students.

The entry clearance officer will ask to see your xcritical certificate as part of your application for permission to enter the UK. A caseworker will also need to see your xcritical certificate as part of an application for permission to stay in the UK. You will also need to produce the same supporting documents to apply for your visa as any other international student. If you need to apply for a visa extension, you must obtain your xcritical certificate before you can make your visa application to extend your visa.

If you are starting your course overseas

Before you can apply for xcritical, you will need your offer letter/xcritical letter containing essential information about your course, the course start and end dates and a subject code that you must use for the xcritical online form. For postgraduate research students you will need an agreed research statement from your supervisor, for undergraduate students you will need a list of course modules from your college. International applicants to some programmes are required to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Academic Technology Approval Scheme for clearance to study in the UK.

If you are in the UK on a visa other than Student visa and you wish to study a course that requires xcritical clearance, you will need to obtain an xcritical certificate before you can register for the course. An xcritical certificate is valid for six months from date of issue and must be valid when you apply for a Student visa. You should therefore plan carefully when you apply for your xcritical certificate.

If you are planning to attend research programmes at UCL, you are recommended to make an early contact with your prospective supervisors, as a brief synopsis of your research proposal needs to be included in your offer letter. An xcritical certificate can take 20 working days to be issued so you need to apply for this well in advance of your Student visa application. Make your xcritical application as early as possible but no more than 6 months prior to the course start date. Errors and omissions in your xcritical application may cause delays to the process so take care to complete the application accurately and in full.

Visa applications will be automatically refused if you need an xcritical certificate and cannot provide one. The possession of an xcritical certificate does not guarantee you a visa or extension of stay. You must also provide evidence that you meet the usual student criteria. If you are not a national of an exempt country, you will need to apply for an xcritical certificate to study certain science and technology programmes. Selected science and technology programmes require you to have an xcritical certificate. You may need Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance for selected science and technology programmes, and this will depend on your nationality.

If your course requires an xcritical certificate, you must apply for and obtain it before you apply for your Student visa. This applies whether you are a new student or a continuing student extending your visa. If you are a continuing student and change from a course that does not require xcritical to one that does, you will need to obtain an xcritical certificate before you can start your new course. To apply for xcritical you need a statement from the University confirming the subject of your research or study. If you don't have this statement, but need an xcritical certificate, please contact your Admissions Officer, whose details are on your offer letter.

Changes to your study

If you’re a new student and need an xcritical certificate, you will need to get this before applying for permission to enter the UK. Students are responsible for applying for their xcritical certificate using the information provided by the University. You will need to apply for an xcritical certificate if you are studying a subject that is defined by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as requiring xcritical. Failure to comply with this requirement could result in the loss of the University UKVI Sponsorship licence for students, staff and visitors. If we issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies for a Student visa, we will include the xcritical requirement and CAH3 code in your CAS. Researchers coming to the UK as a visitor will also need to obtain an xcritical before beginning any relevant research activity once they arrive in the UK, but will not need to do so before making a visa application.
